Joulz staff member Peter van Velzen is a member of CIGRE Work Group B1.50, and is contributing to a paper on surge arresters and cross-bonding. During the CIGRE meeting in Paris in August, Peter gave a talk on this topic for an international audience.
The paper discusses the use of surge arresters, covering every relevant aspect from dimensioning to maintenance. No reliable information on this topic is currently available. The paper is still being prepared and is scheduled for publication in 2017.
Cross-bonding concerns the earthing of cables installed in a horizontal configuration. Cables are usually installed in a triangular configuration, which means that cross-bonding is less effective. There is simply not enough room in the Netherlands for three cables next to each other, although other countries do have enough room for this configuration. The situation in all participating countries was discussed during the two-day CIGRE meeting, with members sharing their practical experiences. The participating countries were: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom, United States and Turkey.
